Funeral Home

The very first step when organising a burial at a cemetery is to select a funeral home and director to help assist you throughout the process, which involves choosing choose a location, time, headstone and style of burial.

Burial Plot

One of the first steps that must be taken when arranging a burial at a metropolitan cemetery is the purchasing of a burial plot. In some situations, a burial plot may have been pre-arranged. If one was not, then the next step would be to discuss and settle on a suitable location with the funeral director.

Often, the funeral director will discuss options with you, perhaps even visiting the cemetery or memorial grounds if you would like.

Burial Confirmation

The next step is the completion of the burial confirmation form. The form gives information that will be vital for the burial, such as measurements of the deceased, including weight and height. It also gives information about the coffin, and the actual burial itself.

When filling out the form, you will be able to mention any special needs that you and your family may have, including religious or personal requirements.

The form may be completed by you or by your funeral director with your help.

Pre-Burial Preparation

This step involves the preparation of the grave site. Measurements are checked, and then the grave is dug.

The Burial

A verification of the deceased will occur at the time of burial, but this will be the funeral director’s responsibility to carry out.

After the verification, the coffin will be lowered into the grave with a lowering device. Some families choose to have a small service at this point, whilst others choose not to. Some have a service beforehand, others afterward – it is dependent on the family and their individual needs.

Flowers may also be placed upon the coffin, or individual flowers may be thrown inside the grave.

Post-Burial

After the burial and service is complete and after the family and friends have left, the burial staff will clean the area and fill the grave.

The headstone will be added as soon as it is manufactured and delivered, at which point the cemetery will inform the family.
